The past few years have brought Volbeat closer to the road than almost any band in rock. Their grinding tour schedule, and exceptional work ethic brought them to the Sleep Train Amphitheater in Chula Vista, CA, for the “Operation Kick Ass“. A few hours before the set I caught up with Volbeat front-man, Michael Poulsen for an interview.
It had been a little over a year since I had sat down with Michael. Even though I have seen him live on stage many times since his dramatic weight loss, it was still very surprising seeing him up close. It was question/subject that had gone unasked, and I had to find out why he lost all the weight, and even more, HOW he lost all the weight on the road. Michael tells of a special training partner that whipped him into shape and of course how this has directly effected his playing and singing.
Moving on to the live show and set list, Michael explains that the band knows what select few live songs definitely work, and how they are open to changing things up nightly depending on the crowd vibe. The groove on the stage is top notch.
Almost a year into have Rob Caggiano (ex-Anthrax) in the band has proven to mesh very well, and made one hell of a great sounding live set. Operation Kick Ass was another stellar show with the Danish metallers, and things are only looking to get bigger and louder with Volbeat. Check out my live pics and the set-list from show below!
